It was June outside today, so we walked to the bakery. Karl was not walking, so he was on my shoulders, and Sanna was not walking, so she was in the wagon. Two kids rode past on bikes when we approached a wet patch of sidewalk. I dodged them and walked around, suddenly finding my feet slipping out from under me like I was on swivel casters. It was like a Steve Martin skit, or that episode of Ellen when she tried to replace the water cooler bottle, only I had a small child on my shoulders, and my grip on his ankles was the only thing preventing his skull from crashing into the pavement.
I skittered and swayed and splayed and remained on my feet until the pavement was dry. Karl was still on my shoulders, except he was upside down, and we were back to back. Brooke and Sanna were still on the other side of the puddle, both of them about to burst into tears.
Brooke was amazed I didn't fall. I figured falling wasn't an option, so I didn't.

you sound like SUPER mom! Awesome save! If I'd seen you on the sidewalk, I would have probably applauded. :-)
I fell once with my 1.5 yr daughter in a sling in the parking garage on the way to a ped. appt. I did a shoulder roll w/ arms around my baby. I tore my pants at the knee and got scratched up, but she never even touched the pacement! I was SO proud and surprised/shaken at the same time... I told my story as soon as I arrived at the desk... but they were all concerned about ME when all I wanted them to hear was, "Look! I saved the baby!" :-) Moms...
wow
Moments like that are insanely scary. I'm so glad nothing happened!
Me too (glad nothing happened). I had my seven week in a baby bjorn and tripped on a crack in the sidewalk. I tucked, rolled, and tore my stitches from my vaginal birth. She slept on, clueless as to how close I came to falling on her. Afterward, I wept.
skull or skill? sounds like both!
Wow! Moments like those are SO scary! I'm glad you were able to stay up.
I also had a stubble down cement stairs when I had my baby girl in my arms. Like you, in my mind it was just not an option to really fall. I nearly tore my arm out of its socket by holding on to the rail, and I still landed on my knees. Skinned my shin (I have a nice scar now) and tore up my hands, but not even a hair on the baby touched the ground or stairs.
It's amazing how the instinct to protect your baby comes in to play at moments like that. Happy you both are okay :)
I'm VERY happy everyone's okay, but I am not at all sure you handled this appropriately, Emilin.
You got lucky: babies bounce, grownups break.
I'm not saying you necessarily should have ditched the poor kid and saved yourself. I'm just saying, put calcification in the calculation (in any future non-skull-risking incidents).
